In May half term 2015 we encouraged everyone to get outside and be Naturally Healthy.  A wide range of events were held across the county from bug hunts to Park runs and health walks.

Torbay’s Geopark Festival
Celebrate The English Riviera’s UNESCO Geopark at the Geopark Festival.  There will be a range of events all week that can help you enjoy, explore and experience all of the different aspects of the Geopark.  Find out more here.

Trill Farm Family Camps, Axminster
Saturday 23rd May until Monday 25th May
Families can connect with nature, each other, explore, discover and enjoy beautiful landscape and countryside through a varied program of fun outdoor activities from bushcraft, shelter building, crafts and cooking to climbing and wild-swimming.  Camping takes place at Trill Farm’s beautiful campsite, which has excellent eco-credentials.  Adult tickets cost £100, under 16s £56 and under 5s may attend free of charge. Bugs Hunt
Tiverton Library. Spot all the bugs in the library to have a chance of winning your very own insect hotel. Open to all ages.

Family Challenge Trail , Seaton
Seaton library is challenging families with primary school-aged children to get Out & About in their local area with its Family Challenge Trail which they can collect from the library.  The trail takes them to places in the locality which are free to access, like local parks, the beach, river and woods and suggests activities for each location.  Anyone who completes the trail will be awarded a certificate.  The library has also linked up with the local Primary Schools who will award House Points (or their school’s equivalent) to every child who takes part.

Also – Local author Sara Perry will be coming to both Seaton and Colyton Libraries (on Wednesday 27th May and Thursday 28th May respectively) to present her new children’s book What If? Which is aimed at helping young children develop their self esteem and is being sold in aid of the charity Young Minds.  Also the regular Bounce & Rhyme (Wednesday 27th May) and Storytime (Thursday 28th May) sessions in the library will have a Nature theme.

The play park in Cowick barton Playing Fields 26th May 10am
It is designed to gradually work you up to running 5k, or for half an hour, in just nine weeks. Active Devon who have funded this group will be bringing along other play activities for all the family to enjoy. Come along, find out what we do and bring a picnic! The group meet in term time at 9.15 every Tuesday at Bowhill Primary School. It is free to join and they are encouraging anyone interested in the community to participate. Guided Bat Walk and BBQ
Stover Country Park – Wednesday 27 May, 8pm – 10.30pm
A chance to discover which species of bat are out and about at Stover Country Park. Hear the nightjar ‘chur’ on the heath, look for glow worms and enjoy a BBQ at this twilight event.

Bat Walk
Grand Western Canal, 27th May 9pm.
As part of ‘Naturally Healthy Week’ discover what bats live at the Grand Western Canal by joining Rangers on our Bat Walk and have a go at using the bat detectors to identify local species. Starting near Tiverton, this 1½ mile walk along the towpath will take approximately 1½ hours. Please bring a torch and warm clothing. All children should be accompanied by an adult. Berry Head Bat Walks, Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust
Friday 29 May 2015
A unique opportunity to see the rare Greater Horseshoe bats at Berry Head, a Geopark Gateway Site. Beginning at the Visitor Centre to see the bats in their roost using the cave camera, then heading onto the reserve to see how our cows help to feed the bats.  Then watch the spectacle of the bats emerging from the roost, using bat detectors to hear their calls.  Meet: Berry Head Visitor Centre.  Cost: Adults – £5.00 and Children – £3.50 plus car parking.   Booking essential on 01803 520022. Click here for further information.
